No Chain

After eight days off the bike I was expecting to suffer. SXSW had done a number on my training, not that I’d actually miss it, but it was time to get back on the bike and ready for the coming races.

To make up for lost time I planned a pretty ambitious weekend to kick start the engine. Saturday was going to be a long solo ride. Around lake Washington and Sammamish before heading back into Seattle. Long rides aren’t bad with teammates, you’ve got someone to chat with and keep your mind off the ache in your legs. Solo, it’s just you and your thoughts and the suffering as the miles role by.

Sunday would be a different story. A group ride with my cousin and the guys from the shop. It would be a good day to rest but there was still the local “Alpe d’Huez” climb at the end. One that on good days can make you hurt and after a long day in the saddle the previous day—it was going to kill.

Strangely though it never did. Despite the long absence my legs felt fresh and strong. I was able to do long pulls pushing my limits and bounce back quickly. Miles just rolled by, even when I turned into the oncoming storm to make it home on Saturday. It was a great weekend of riding.

I can only hope to have that same feeling this coming weekend when I take the line for my first two road races of the season.
